English Language Arts and Mathematics Tests
Preliminary Results
Spring 2015 Administration
Highlights
The new Ohio State Tests in English language arts and mathematics were administered for the first time during
the 2014-2015 school year. These tests were produced by the Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for
College and Careers (PARCC), of which Ohio was a member until July 1, 2015. Future tests in these subjects
will be Ohio-specific tests developed by Ohio educators with the American Institutes for Research.
On Sept. 15, 2015, the State Board of Education approved the cut scores and performance levels
recommended by PARCC. The board's approval aligns Ohio's standards with those of every other state in the
consortium.
Students who began ninth grade before July 1, 2014, are required to pass the Ohio Graduation Tests in order
to meet the state testing requirements for a diploma. These students were excused from all new state tests
except for American history and American government. For this reason, only small populations of accelerated
students took the Grade 10 English language arts, geometry and integrated mathematics II tests, and the
performance of these students may not be representative of future students taking these tests.
The preliminary results of the spring 2015 test administration provide the basis for these highlights. Schools
and districts have not verified these results. The final figures may differ due to rescoring, late scoring and other
changes.
Numbers of Students Tested
Table 1 presents the total numbers of public school (including community school) students who took the
English language arts and mathematics tests in the spring of 2015. High school end-of-course tests
administered in the fall of 2014 are not included in these figures. Third-graders took the Ohio Achievement
Assessment in reading during the 2014-2015 school year.

Scale Score Ranges for Performance Levels
Table 2 provides the scaled scores associated with each of the five performance levels on each test for the
spring 2015 administration. Unlike raw cut scores, scale cut scores are invariant and apply to all forms of the
same test. However, because future English language arts and mathematics tests will be Ohio-specific, their
cut scores will not be comparable to those applied in 2014-2015.
