The "Sticks and Stones: Bullying Prevention Toolkit" has been designed to serve as a
resource for South Dakota schools in providing bullying prevention resources to students
and parents. Instead of focusing on one bullying prevention event, this toolkit provides
the flexibility for conducting a one-day, one-week or one-month recognition. It also
serves as a curriculum guide, linking to over 80 lesson plans, 5 fact sheets and
16 different games and activities for K-12 classrooms. Bullying prevention posters can
also be printed for display.

Provide your students with the tools and resources they need to prevent and stop
bullying situations. The following facts illustrate why bullying prevention and character
education is important at every grade level:
In a recent national survey of students in grades 6-10, 13% reported bullying others, 11%
reported being the target of bullies and another 6% said that they bullied others and were
    bullied themselves.
Bullying takes on different forms in male and female youth. While both male and female
youth say that others bully them by making fun of the way they look or talk, males are more
likely to report being hit, slapped or pushed. Female youth are more likely than males to
report being the targets of rumors and sexual comments.
Bullies tend to get in trouble more often. They also tend to dislike and do more poorly in
school than teens who do not bully others. Bullies are also more likely to fight, drink and
    smoke than their peers.
Chronic bullies seem to maintain their behaviors into adulthood, negatively influencing their
ability to develop and maintain positive relationships.
                                                                              Source: SafeYouth.org

(NAME OF EVENT) Sponsored By (NAME OF SCHOOL)

The _____________ School District, in partnership with local health and
community organizations, has proclaimed the week of _______________
as (NAME OF EVENT) in an effort to call attention to the issue of bullying
 prevention and student safety.

Data from the 2009 South Dakota Youth Risk Behavior Survey reports
 that:
Nine percent of the respondents had carried a weapon on school property
         during the past 30 days.
Twenty-seven percent of the respondents reported that they had been in
a physical fight during the past 12 months.
Twenty-three percent of the respondents had been touched, grabbed, or
pinched in a sexual way by anyone when they didn't want them to.
Seventeen percent of the respondents had seriously considered suicide
         during the past 12 months.
Seven percent of the respondents reported actually attempting suicide
         during the past 12 months.

This event is planned to raise awareness of these issues and to reduce
 instances of violence against students.

The following activities are planned as part of the event. (LIST AND
 DESCRIBE ACTIVITIES HERE.)

(ADD A QUOTE from school official or healthcare partner.) "It is hoped
that through these activities, students will learn more about the dangers
and risks of bullying and that it is a problem that affects everyone - the
bully, the bystander and the victim."
